Seeing that so many of my ancestors came from Great Glen, a visit to St Cuthbert’s
Church there seemed a good idea. I was lucky enough to find the gravestones of Green
Pywell (a Great Great Great Uncle) and a Joseph Pywell.
I later found that the Great Glen U3A Family History Group had kindly put on line
their transcription and mapping of all the gravestones present in 2006.
There I also found my Great Great Great Grandparents are buried there, but the gravestone
is flat to the ground and in an overgrown area
To the memory of EDWARD PYWELL who departed this life May 31st 1838
aged 62 yrs. Also of ANN PYWELL wife of the above who died March 22nd
1841 aged 62 years
By slow degrees their powr’s decay’d
And kept them long in pain
But now releas’d we trust they live
Where joy eternal reign
There are three other Pywell graves there - William and Beatrice (no other inscription
noted) and also
In Memory of Matthew Thomas, son of William and Sarah Pywell
who died the 4th October 1811 aged one year and 8 months
Tis God who lifts our comforts high
Or sinks them in the grave
He gives and (blessed be his name)
He takes but what he gave
Many family trees on various genealogy websites show my 4X Great Grandfather Joseph
Pywell born in 1725 and dying on 3 October 1810 in Great Glen. However, the inscription
above suggests a birth year of c1848, and two Joseph Pywells dying on the same day
in Great Glen would be a remarkable coincidence!
This grave then is almost certainly a nephew of my 4xGreat Grandfather, also named
Joseph. He was probably born in 1725, but died in 1799, and was the father of my
3xGreat Grandfather Edward mentioned below.
